Kevin Harvick was touted to be 2011 Daytona 500 winner. But he exited the race on lap 22. An engine failure did him in. While his car went to the garage, he walked away to his team’s pit.
Blown motors are commonplace. Similar to Harvick, JJ Yeley had a failed engine during the eleventh lap of the race. But Harvick’s car’s engine failure was a dilemma. His car had the Earnhardt Childress Racing engine which is considered to be a very reliable engine. But not on this day.
Dale Earnhardt disappoints at the 2011 Daytona 500
By finishing 24th, Dale Earnhardt Jr. lost out on the opportunity to commemorate his legendary father’s tenth death anniversary weekend. For it was on this perilous race track that Dale Earnhardt Sr. lost his life. But the race belonged to someone else, and Jr. Earnhardt had to contend with the position he attained.
Luck was not on his side. He was slowed-down in a packed assortment of cars consisting of Ryan Newman and Martin Truex Jr. Even then, he was among the top 6 with ten laps to go. Yet, luck was not on his side again. His tire got cut when he had three more laps to go.
With a flat tire, Earnhardt had to lose time to get a new one replaced. As Earnhardt Jr. later expressed that he was indeed caught in a crappy situation. Somehow things didn’t fall into place on this day.
